The Romans seized it, and the Goths invaded it several times, then the Arabs under the rule of Queen Zenobia, and Emperor Aurelian was able to return it to Roman authority in 272.

 Muslims and Byzantines alternated control of the city many times, and its importance stemming from its strategic location continued as a crossroads of many roads.

Ankara was chosen as the capital of the Turkish Republic after its establishment was declared in 1923, and its location in inner Anatolia had a great impact on this choice. The leaders at that time - led by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk - wanted to protect the capital and to be far from the threats of the allied armies that were roaming the Bosphorus Bay and the Aegean Sea. As well as being the command center of the Turkish forces participating in the War of Independence.
