Etymology:
The name "Beykoz" comes from two parts, the first being "bey", which is a word meaning prince or master. As for the second part, it came from “quz”, which is a Persian word that means a village, and the word “quz” may also mean one of the types of nuts.
Beykoz region throughout history:
It dates back to 700 BC, and the ancient name of the region was Amicus or Amnekos. Because of the region’s richness in fish and its strategic location, Beykoz was settled by successive waves of invaders from all over the Black Sea and beyond, such as: Thracians, Bithynians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, before the Turks settled in.
In the times of the Ottoman Empire, the lands behind Beykoz were forests used by the Ottoman sultans and their court to practice hunting and escape away from the noise of the city, and it contains the fishing hut in Küçüksu , the water fountains and the mosques that adorned the villages along the coast that remained as relics from that era.
